Authors Registry Reaches Agreement with LIRA; Will Distribute over $500,000 in Library Lending Royalties from The Netherlands
The Authors Registry has reached an agreement with LIRA, the Dutch copyright organization representing authors. LIRA collects and distributes payments for a variety of uses of copyright material in the Netherlands, including Public Lending Right. (Public Lending Right is a category of copyright recognized throughout Europe and most of the world which requires payments from libraries to rightsholders, in order to recognize some portion of the lost sales resulting from library lending of copyright work.) Payments allocated within the LIRA system to American authors will be distributed by the Authors Registry. The amount of these payments in this first year of this agreement is in excess of $500,000. Individual author payments vary from less than $10 to over $5,000.
