Authors Registry Exceeds $4,300,000 in Distributions
Since the inception of its Rights Payment Service in 1996, the Authors
Registry has distributed over $4,300,000 to authors. Fees and royalties
from magazine publishers and from foreign rights societies have found their
way to thousands of U.S. authors via the Authors Registry, which offers
this service free of charge to publishers in order to expedite the payment
process. Publishers and organizations who enter into agreements with the
Registry send a lump payment and a set of author payment data. The
Registry creates payment accounts for individual authors, assigns payments
to these accounts, locates the authors, and sends out checks. There is no
charge to the publisher or organization for this service. The Registry
retains a 5% commission from payments to authors in order to recoup some of
its operating costs. Payments to authors vary widely in size, from as
little as $10 to several thousand dollars.
