Authors Registry Marks Its Third Anniversary
Distributions Exceed $650,000
May 18, 1998 - The Authors Registry marked the third anniversary of its
founding by announcing that distributions of payments to writers have passed
the $650,000 mark. Registry checks have gone out to thousands of authors in
payment of royalties and fees for secondary uses of their works. The payments
originate with publishers who have agreed to distribute money for re-use through
the Registry, and with the Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society, a British
organization that collects and distributes photocopy and other royalties to authors.
The Registry was created by a consortium of writers' organizations including the
Authors Guild, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Dramatists Guild,
and the Association of Authors' Representatives. To date over 100 literary agencies
and 30 writers' organizations, representing over 50,000 authors, have agreed to
cooperate with the Registry.
