Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine to
Pay E-Rights Fees Through the Registry
January 31, 1997 - Two more major magazines have arranged to pay
freelance writers for online use of their work through the Authors Registry.
American Express Publishing has signed an agreement with the Registry, the
licensing and royalty payment agency for freelance writers, on behalf of
Travel & Leisure and Food & Wine, which have a
combined audience of more than 7.5 million.
The publisher, through the not-for-profit Authors Registry, will begin by
paying some 150 writers more than $15,000 in fees for use of their works on
America Online and on the World Wide Web during 1995 and 1996, according to
Rich Fairfield, American Express Publishing vice president for new media.
Both magazines, Fairfield said, will continue to use the Registry's services to
make online use payments in 1997 and beyond according to their current contracts
with freelancers, which specify a fee for each reuse. "This company has always
been committed to doing business with freelancers on fair terms," he said. "Our
arrangement with the Authors Registry to pay writers for participation in our new
media ventures fits that policy. For us, it's a sensible way to pay writers who
are part of our online presence."
