The Nation Will Share Electronic Income Through the Registry
June 14, 1996 - The Nation has announced that it will share the
income it receives from CD-ROM and online databases with authors; the magazine will
pay the royalties through the Authors Registry. "We strongly believe that freelance
writers should be compensated for the use and reuse of their work, in the new media
as in the old," said company president Jack Berkowitz. "Where we have syndication
rights to articles, The Nation shares the proceeds. It's certainly right to
share the income from electronic reuse of articles too. We're happy the Authors
Registry is taking on the role of helping publishers act on that principle."
Earlier this year, Harper's became the first magazine to offer a new-media
royalty arrangement to its contributors.
